BATON ROUGE – Jan Brett, author and illustrator of numerous beloved children’s books, is the 2021 recipient of the Regina Medal, the prestigious annual award given by the Catholic Library Association (CLA) for a continued, distinguished contribution to children’s literature without regard to the nature of the contribution.

Brett is best known for her intricate watercolor illustrations of animals and nature, and the quickly-recognizable and distinctive borders and side-panels that have become her trademark.   One of her best-known works, “The Mitten,” is a retelling of a Ukrainian folktale.

Brett works primarily in watercolor, using an almost dry brush to produce intricate paintings. The elaborate borders in many of her books use pictures to include foreshadowing, additional details, and humorous side stories.
