Preservation Survey Results Released by ATLA

A report on the In Good Faith: Collection Care, Preservation, and Access is Small Theological and Religious Studies Libraries survey on preservation and collections care issues at small libraries and archives based at theological and religious studies organizations has just been released by ATLA. Professional Development Day for Librarians and Support Staff at St. John’s University

Countless studies have shown that students achieve at higher levels when their school library programs are effective and partnered with subject area teachers. Both interrelated instruction and professionally selected materials relevant to instruction are the domain of the school librarian/media specialist.

The School Librarian in the Core Curriculum is a special day planned on Saturday, October 4th, at St. John’s University Library D’Angelo Center for library staff from the Diocese of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre.

Carl Vitivich, Superintendent of Nassau BOCES School Library System will present the facts, strategies and materials that will enable the Catholic schools to be relevant and competitive in the new environment of the Core Curriculum.

Separate sessions will be dedicated to elementary and high school levels, and materials will be useful for implementing the new focus of learning today.

Time: 9:30-3:00 P.M.
Place: St. John’s University Library, Room 406

Preregistration for this event is required. Deadline is October 1. The cost is $10.00 for materials and refreshments.

Take a Chance on the Tenth and Final CLA Collaborative Quilt!

Several members of CLA took the challenge and made a quilt block with fabric provided at last year’s convention and the results are pictured. It is a primary color quilt that would fit a twin bed; the backing includes several more member quilt blocks. You have a chance to win this beautiful twin sized quilt and a special bonus pillow. Chances for the quilts will be sold at the CLA convention in Orlando or you can contact Cathy Fennell to purchase chances ahead of time, if you are unable to attend the convention. Chances are $1.00 a piece or 6 for $5.00. Please contact Cathy Fennell at [email protected]. The raffle will take place on April 9, 2015 but you do not need to be present for the drawing. Proceeds from the quilt raffle will go to the Catholic Library Association Scholarship Fund. This is the last quilt challenge, so get your chances now! Thank you for your support of CLA.

 

2014 Regina Medal Winner - Patricia Reilly Giff

Author Patricia Reilly Giff received the Regina Medal Award at a luncheon in her honor on April 23, 2014, at the CLA convention in Pittsburgh, PA. She is a two-time Newbery Honor winner: Lily’s Crossing (Delacorte, 1997) was honored in 1998 and Pictures of Hollis Woods (Random House/Wendy Lamb Books, 2002) in 2003. She is also the author of the Polk Street School series for younger readers. Read her bio here.
