POSITION SUMMARY

The successful candidate will work with students, faculty and staff to support initiatives promoting effective learning, scholarship and research both in-person and online. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide library reference services both in-person and online and help expand library services in support of the University’s mission, vision and goals.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Promotes good public relations with friendly, competent, professional reference service to all library patrons.
  2. Provides advice and support to students, including interpreting usefulness of reference materials for student projects; advises students on selection and focus of topics for research papers and guides students in development of effective search strategies.
  3. Advises students on citation methods, copyright issues and provides other support as needed to promote learning and research success.
  4. Instructs and assists patrons in the use of print and electronic reference sources and in the use of library equipment.
  5. Collaborates with faculty in development of instruction sessions tailored to the curriculum, class assignments and student readiness.
  6. Researches, evaluates and selects library materials to assist in maintenance and upgrading of print and electronic reference and circulating collections.
  7. Assists in maintaining and updating the library website.
  8. Develops, evaluates and implements services in conjunction with the Head of Public Services.
  9. Troubleshoots access problems for electronic library resources and communicates in a timely manner with appropriate internal and external parties to establish solutions.
  10. Provides reference services during the evening and/or weekend hours.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

  1. Experience using and managing common library and reference database systems with preference to experience with Sierra.
  2. Willingness and ability to learn and expand use of all software—including electronic databases—currently in use at the JPII Library.
  3. Knowledge of HTML and an understanding of authentication protocols desired.
  4. Ability to use word processing software, spreadsheets, and other computer applications in a Windows environment.
  5. Basic knowledge of library and computer equipment operation and maintenance.

  2. Is dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.
  3. Uses effective speaking and listening techniques to ensure clear and actionable communications.

  5. Can be consistently counted on to follow through, meet commitments and deliver results.

Education & Experience

  • ALA accredited M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. required.
  • At least a year of experience working as an academic librarian.
  • Experience with academic print/electronic reference sources. OhioLINK experience preferred (or another statewide academic library consortium).
  • Proven ability and commitment to provide proactive, courteous and prompt services to library users.
  • Experience teaching the use of print and electronic resources, bibliographic instruction and/or information literacy skills.

Workplace Factors

  • Must be able to work at a service desk for long periods of time during assigned shifts.
  • Must be able to lift books and push filled book carts and navigate about the building assisting users in locating research materials.
  • Must be able to work some evening and/or weekend hours.
